The Carbon - App Sync and Backup is now available as a free download on Google Play for Android owners. The application is designed for use in English language. It weighs in at only 10MB to download. This is actually a great backup app for non rooted devices i e for backing up app data without root and when it works it works great But it hasn t been working that well lately and I m not sure it will work again and it s probably not the developer s fault given that Google is restricting Android more and more these days I hate to give negative reviews but it s just not working on my Xperia XZ now whereas it actually did work on it last summer I have no idea what changed     Elias Alucard

I needed to transfer a large number of Visual Voicemails to my new Note 10 before wiping my old phone for a trade in It took a little doing but using Helium to backup my VVM to internal storage copying the carbon folder to my PC desktop copying the VVM folder from that back to my new phone u0026 restoring using Helium actually worked Awesome app The only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars is the inability to back up to a phone s microSD card Please add this essential option                 Nick Knight

Doesn t Seem to Work Anymore This used to be a great app for backing up apps and app data Doesn t work at all now for some reason Also now all of a sudden it requires re connecting to desktop to enable backup even when my phone hasn t been turned off or restarted     David Gordon

I paid 4 99 for the upgraded version so I thought this was supposed to be the end game for SMS and MMS backup Thought wrong Don t waste your time and money with this app It seems to do only push backups and only to an undocumented directory in one s phone Also there is absolutely no tech support for this excuse of an app I m fairly savvy in both Windows and Android I now vividly see why people use iPhones despite their shortcomings I recommend staying away from this half baked app from hell Good Luck     Paul Sarbell

I have one tricky game that always failed to connect to Google Play to allow me to backup my 485 levels worth of progress I switched to a new phone last night and of course that app s data didn t transfer over Using Helium I was able to backup and restore the game data and can now play it on the new phone from where I left off I took off a star because it wasn t quite as straightforward a process as I would have liked but I was able to figure it out anyway                 Jae Cii

This used to be the end all app for un rooted back ups but it appears to no longer get the level of support it used to With constant crashes majority of apps unable to backup and cloud accounts refusing to connect This thing is now a nightmare to use and frankly incredibly disappointing compared to what it used to be I have the Premium and I am still glad I had bought it back when I did but I wouldn t waste my money on it now at least until the Devs decide to put some time into fixing it     Kristopher Roy

It works and is the only app that can backup app data without root But for some reason I actually have to open some apps before it will do a successful backup and others that it s supposed to backup may not work at all I have to take one star off of my old review for that but still an app that I can t do without                 Clint Seeber

Not sure it s for me Seems i was forced to use a USB cable when what i really wanted was a wireless connection The app had exactly what i needed otherwise Had to uninstall since i can t use WiFi to do my backups Working with USB cables will get old very fast     suukuri ido

Sadly a complete failure on my Blu Vivo XL2 w Android 6 I tried Windows desktop on two different machines Chrome addon Cannot get beyond the switch to PTP step Of course I have changed the USB to PTP mode But this is just not recognized for some reason I can get at the phone with normal ADB and Eclipse for Android app development Not sure why this is failing here I will give 3 stars because this dev knows what he s doing big time and I do not Also it could be an issue with this phone Have no other devices with Android 5 so cannot test that Wish I could make this work             David White

I need to transfer data OFF of an XO tablet This app whines that it is not compatible SO it is WORTHLESS for the task it is needed for And thanks to Google and their hostile attitude that you aren t allowed to manage your OWN hardware there isn t any other option to move your data off the device Seems even a Microsoft Mobile device would be more open than Android     James LaBarre

Doesn t really work anymore on Android 9 It doesn t register itself as an installer and therefore is unable to restore the apps You can workaround it by using other third party apps to transfer the apks and then use the recovery function to restore their settings but still abanoned and not maintained and very tedious process to first transfer apks one by one before restoring settings     Marc Elser

adb device detected followed every step mentioned on the official reference material and even did some googling stuck at trying to get my PC to enable app backups on the phone It shows the green check mark but no progress beyond that Even enabled picture transfer just in case Android 9 0 on an S9 non root     Thomas Cross

Expect a world of pain if you re on Linux Tip if you get device permission errors when you do run sh then with the phone disconnected from PC in Settings search for USB revoke USB debugging also from the settings search for USB open select USB Config and choose MTP for good measure turn debugging off may or may not be required Connect phone to PC and turn debugging on you should see a prompt for an RSA key Accept it and now run sh should work There s loads of complaints about getting adb permissions working so since Helium depends on this it would be good to have more thorough docs available on fixing these issues Downgrading to two stars I did manage to create some backups but restoring them using the app appears to be nigh on impossible Instead I had to restore the ab files using adb         blindfish

It still works for me with Pie 9 What people may not understand stand is you have to install the app using Google play Helium just restores the data I restored email app the through Helium nothing Installed the app with google play bingo all my email accounts show and work                     M S

Wants me to change my phone to PTP mode I won t say it s impossible on a ATu0026T Samsung Galaxy S9 but I cannot find the setting I ve enabled developer mode enabled USB debugging and I ve gone into the USB options and changed those settings but the app always wants me to enable the setting So it s rather useless as far as I m concerned     Mike Amos

Even after jumping through so many hoops installation of drivers enable debugging etc it still won t backup most of the apps saying backup is disabled Maybe Google is to blame for this Still didn t solve my purpose at all         sanchit bhatnagar

Awkward but with help from a webpage describing how to use it it was reasonably successful in transferring app data that should be a seamless experience I m a techie and I was able to do it successfully but heaven help anyone non techie even trying It really shouldn t be that hard I had to back up to internal storage on a phone without removable storage then upload to Drive download to the new device copy the files to the right folder on the new device before restoring the backup                     Mike Windsor

would have been good in my unrooted phone huawei phone but it cannot back up half of my apps like the important whatsapp This according to Helium is because developer does not allow backing up Rubbish really luckily the huawei phone s built in backup backs up everything including data i just wanted to have something like titanium backup which i use on my rooted phones Alas helium is a big fail can t backup many apps only a few that i don t even care to back up     J R

Prior to Android 8 this was my most trusted and useful backup app because it backed up the app data It was kind of a pain to make it work and it had a tendency to error out and need to be restarted or use smaller backup groups instead of just the whole device but it worked Under Android 8 it does not work at all It cannot back up any single app s data that I tested and I tried basically everything that downloaded configured saved or set up anything I miss it already     Jonathan Estill

Garbage app that s a pain to get to even work properly at all There s plenty of much better apps out there that do the same thing as this one and that also don t charge you money or pester you with ads I think the newer versions of android already have app backup functionality in them already too     Daniel B

The only thing worse than an app that doesn t work is an app that you think works and that you trust to work but doesn t work I used to use this app religiously and have bought the premium version Backed up my phone to do a full reset but now I can t restore anything Helium says I m not logged into any Google accounts I am of course so I can t get to anything that I backed up And searches to find a solution yield no results because there are SO many other people with endless problems with this app that it s like finding a needle in a haystack I m done with this my blood pressure is high enough already     Paul L

The initial setup was a little frustrating you may need to search for your specific device for the software to work it would recognize my Droid Turbo but once I got past that it worked amazingly well This is perfect for transferring game save data in between phones if there s no cloud save and the files are hidden and would otherwise need a rooted device to transfer So glad I didn t have to start my game progress from scratch                     Bryan Sullivan

If you don t or can t root your phone this is not an easy app to deal with but once I figured out the quirks it worked for my BB Priv First install the latest Android sdk on your pc with the default options Then install the desktop Helium app not the chrome app Install the adb universal driver from the Helium website Then you need to find and replace the adb exe adbwinapi dll u0026 adbwinusbapi dll files in both the driver and Helium folders with the latest versions from the Android sdk                     Adam Geary

I can t count the hours I took trying to move a couple of game data sets from one tablet to another I m not giving 1 star because it did eventually make a copy but that copy could not be restored onto the newer table While 4 99 for the Helium key is not much it was completely wasted Don t waste your time on this product         John Glendening

It didn t used to require a pc to work now it does and the pc program didn t run I used to use this app to backup app settings and rwstore them like lucky patcher does         Ahmad AL-hakeem

Very unreliable No useful error reporting or debugging output I spent a Sunday trying to restore a tablet from backup and in the end after many attempts all I got was a partial restore of some of the apps that were in the backup There was no useful error or status messages from the web interface when attempting to restore Not a list of successful and failed restores no error messages no information at all I dug into the backup zip file and discovered that the ab files for the most part were corrupted and could not be converted to tar files even with the latest 2018 0521 version of abe jar I also saw zero sized icon png files Is no checking done for success during the backup operation And when the restore fails why not tell the user what worked and what did not Overall Helium is a nearly completely opaque app not that uncommon but worse is that it fails so miserably with no useful information as to what went wrong And not checking that backup zip is correct and restore able as part of the backup process is a massive flaw Oh and did I mention that Helium would not backup to the external sdcard just the internal one This limitation makes no sense     Lars Thon

Terrible doesn t work at all Everything is set up desktop app ptp option enabled Pc verifies its connected I go to back up and it fails everytime I go to login to google it says throws an error saying im not logged into any google drive accounts then the next prompt says im logged in still doesnt work regardless     Aj

This app worked like a champ Had a couple of games on my old Samsung Note 8 Load the Helium app on both my old Note 8 and my new Note 9 I used the Windows Helium app to enable the Helium app on the phones I had an encrypted phone password protected so I had to enter the password into the app on both sides Backed up the games to internal storage on the Note 8 copied them over the the Carbon directory on the Note 9 and ran the restore Again worked great One note if you get an error on the backup device Note 8 for me you need to unplug the USB cable and then plug it back in Not sure why this is required but I had to do it to get mine backup to work Thanks Carbon Helium team Gonna go buy the Pro version now                     Daniel Orille

The thing that Helium does is AWESOME and has actually improved the quality of my life no joke I paid for premium even though i didn t need the features just because i felt like Clockworkmod deserved money for taking up the unforgivable slack left by so many developers who refuse to implement backups to the Google cloud Those other devs should be paying YOU Koushik since there are several apps i wouldn t even touch if it weren t for Helium HOWEVER This is hands down the most difficult app i ve ever dealt with and that s saying something considering i ve been dealing with difficult apps since the damn 70 s In convincing Helium to do its magical thing i spent probably a total of 18 hours trying and re trying different permutations of settings and approaches scouring forums for solutions to mysterious blockages weeping retrieving defenestrated Androids from the yard etc I could have read an entire book in the time i spent struggling with this app I wouldn t have but that s beside the point                 misha lunchbox

Not very user friendly but works I kept getting an error when trying to backup to all three cloud storage methods and it would backup to internal storage but even after debugging I couldn t transfer from my S6 to S10 I watched the developers old video on the Play Store and finally got it to work but the only way it to choose the PC Download option and backup to my computer and then restore to the new device from the PC I first used this app in 2017 and don t remember having these difficulties             Danielle Taylor

Does not backup most apps This isn t mentioned in this app s description and the premium version does not improve matters I chose a test backup and was shown a list of apps and associated data that I could backup Then I noticed an even LONGER list of apps which this app says backup disallowed offering the advice that I should contact each app developer to ask them to enable backup WHUT Kept this flaw very quiet Glad I didn t buy the premium version         Hedgie Hog

Dont get Terrible menus Never updated Same old gui which is very limited if you want to backup to Google Drive and select it you get an ear meagre that says that you re not loved in to GDrive and you don t have an option to do so if you click backup you don t know the destination or have a progress bar of the backup this is a trickle app that appears to have been abandoned by it s developer It has no place in today s introduce app realm really     Joseph Bolanos
